Rim light or back light is a technique engineered to bring out a very strong outline in the subject, with the light focused behind or by the side of them to bring attention to particular features. The contrast between the light and darkness causes a fantastical and almost artistic effect, almost as if a part of the subject has been completely blanked out. Depending on the angling of the camera and the ISO and aperture settings, the outcome can come across either very sharply or more subtly.
