Long exposure lighting

Rim Lighting

Rim light or back light is a technique engineered to bring out a very strong outline in the subject, with the light focused behind or by the side of them to bring attention to particular features. The contrast between the light and darkness causes a fantastical and almost artistic effect, almost as if a part of the subject has been completely blanked out. Depending on the angling of the camera and the ISO and aperture settings, the outcome can come across either very sharply or more subtly.

Hard Lighting

Hard lighting is mainly used for men in the fashion industry; it helps to bring out facial structure and creates a more masculine, edgy atmosphere. In this lighting technique, reflectors are not used as it is important to obtain the contrast in lightness and darkness.

Soft Lighting

Soft lighting is often used to capture women in fashion magazines, as it is constructed to make their skin seem bright and glowing. A 'soft box' and reflector is used to do this.

A soft box is a lighting device which involves a light covered by a sheet of fabric, which is used to diffuse the light towards a 'reflector.' There are two sides to a reflector:
  1. One side is shiny, and it warmly bounces the light from the soft box towards the subject.
  2. The other side is not shiny, and it will bounce the light towards the subject for a colder effect.
